Thomas Blair, Jr., LDO, is a veteran of the US Air Force where he began his career in opticianry more than 30 years ago.

He is a honors graduate of the
Ophthalmic Science program at Camden County College in Blackwood NJ, and maintains license to practice in 3 states: Florida, Georgia, and New
Jersey.

He was licensed as an Ophthalmic Technician in New Jersey as well.


  • From 1980-1 - Adjunct instructor in the Ophthalmic Dispensing program at former Somerset County College in Raritan NJ. 
  • 1995 - Master of Ophthalmic Optics certification from the ABO in   
  • 1998 - completed requirements for a Master’s degree in Applied Occupational 


Training and Development – Opticianry.

  • Served opticianry in many leadership capacities over the past 25 years, including the Opticians Assoc. 
  • Georgia (president), the Georgia State Bd. of Dispensing Opticians (vice-chairman)
  • Opticians Assoc. of America (board of directors)
  • Southeastern Opticians Conference (president). 
  • Past V/Chairman of the Commission on Opticianry Accreditation (COA), 
  • Chairman of the OAA Legislative Committee 
  • Adjunct Faculty Instructor at DeKalb Technical College in the Opticianry Program (since 2009). 

Among the various awards and honors received
  • 2001 - OAA State Society Leader of the Year, 
  • 2003 - recipient of the Gosnell Award as an Outstanding Optician of the Southeast
  • (1995, 2001and 2010) 3 time OAG Optician of the year 
  •  2008 NAO Ambassador of the Year Award.
  • 1999 - Inducted into the Camden County College Ophthalmic Science Hall of Fame  
  • 2005 - Inducted into the Georgia Opticians Hall of Fame  

The DTC Opticianry program was phased out in 2K12. The program was reinstated at GPTC in 2014. Mr. Blair was reappointed as an adjunct instructor in Jan. 2015, and in June 2015 was named the Society to Advance Opticianry national 2015 Optician of the Year.
